Before you begin Prerequisites

  • Pool is closed for winter
  • Water level already lowered below the tile line (standard winterization)
  • GFCI-protected outdoor outlet nearby
1
Unboxing

Unbox your Pool Guardian unit

Open the box and confirm you have all components: the control box, high-water sensor, low-water sensor, pump, power cable, and mounting hardware. Check the quick-start card to verify nothing is missing before you begin.

Tip: Lay everything out on a flat surface before starting so you can account for each piece.

Hardware

Connect the sensor unit to the control box

Plug the high-water sensor and low-water sensor cables into the labeled ports on the control box. The connectors are keyed — they only fit one way, so no guessing required.

Tip: Look for the HIGH and LOW labels printed on the control box ports.

Mounting

Hang the unit over the pool

Use the included mounting hardware to hang the control box on the pool coping or nearby structure. The unit should be positioned so the sensor cables can reach the desired water level positions without straining.

Tip: Keep the control box out of direct water spray and at least 12 inches above the pool's maximum water level.

Sensors

Adjust the high and low sensor positions

Slide each sensor along the cable to set your desired water levels. Position the low sensor at least 6 inches below the tile line — this is the safe winter level Pool Guardian will maintain. Position the high sensor a few inches above the low sensor, at the level that should trigger drainage.

Tip: The low sensor should always be below your tile line. If you're unsure, measure from the bottom of your tile and add a few inches of clearance.

Pump

Place the pump in the pool

Submerge the included pump in the pool. Position it at the deepest accessible point so it can effectively drain to the low sensor level. Route the pump's discharge hose away from the pool and pool deck to a suitable drainage area.

Tip: Make sure the discharge hose directs water well away from the pool — draining back in defeats the purpose.

Power

Connect the pump to the control box

Plug the pump's cable into the pump port on the control box, then connect the control box to a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet. The control box indicator light will turn on to confirm it has power.

Tip: Always use a GFCI-protected outlet near pools — this is a standard safety requirement for any outdoor electrical connection near water.

Troubleshooting

Common questions during setup

Control box light isn't turning on

Check that the outlet is GFCI-protected and hasn't tripped. Try resetting the GFCI outlet by pressing the test/reset button. Confirm the power cable is fully seated.

Pump isn't turning on when water is at the high sensor

Confirm the pump cable is fully connected to the control box pump port. Check that the high sensor is fully submerged when the water reaches that level.

Pump doesn't stop after draining

Confirm the low sensor is positioned below the intended stop level and isn't tangled or elevated. The sensor must be submerged when the water is above it and exposed (dry) when the water level drops past it.

App can't find the device

Make sure your phone and the Pool Guardian device are on the same WiFi network. If using the Paid plan, confirm you're signed into your account. Try restarting the control box by unplugging it for 10 seconds.
